Horsemanship Classes

Chamounix Horsemanship Classes, Spring 2008

Horsemanship is designed to teach kids about horsemanship and riding with the emphasis on horsemanship. Youth learn about common equine horse care practices, equine behavior, nutrition, safety, proper handling, common illness and injury. Youth help with feeding, turnout, and stall mucking. Equine professionals are scheduled and participants will have the opportunity for observation with question and answer sessions. Educational material is provided. Certificates of merit are awarded through each successful stage of the program. Horsemanship is limited enrollment. $400 per 8 week session.

Horsemanship I:
8 weeks, Monday evenings from 5 pm-8 pm starting April 21st and running through June 9th. Participants will gain a strong foundation in basic horse terms and horse care, including: parts of the horse, breeds, types, colors, horse feed, types of riding, gaits, hoof care, safe and effective groundwork and handling, and proper riding technique. They will participate in weekly riding lessons during the Horsemanship session.

Horsemanship II:
8 weeks, Tuesday evenings from 5 pm-8 pm starting April 22nd and running through June 10th. Prerequisite: Horsemanship I or permission of the instructor. Participants will review the basics as well as cover the following: horse anatomy, first aid, diagnosing lameness, hoof anatomy, the science of horse feeding, and horse showing basics. They will also learn the following skills: taking a horse’s vital signs, giving shots, worming, applying polo wraps and stable bandages, cleaning and dressing wounds, administering medication, and fitting a saddle and bridle. They will participate in weekly riding lessons during the Horsemanship session. Mounted work will focus on improving the rider’s position and concentration, and moving up in the Rider Skill Levels.

Interested parties should contact the stable to receive a Horsemanship application. Space is limited to 6 riders in each Horsemanship class. Chamounix Equestrian Center reserves the right to cancel classes at any time due to lack of interest. If class is cancelled participants will be issued a full refund. There will be no refunds for missed classes after Horsemanship has started. Payment in full is due at the time of application.
