Work to Ride

Welcome Message from our Director, Lezlie Hiner:

Welcome to Chamounix Equestrian Center, Fairmount Park's premiere equestrian center and home of Work to Ride (WTR).

Created in 1994 by Lezlie Hiner, Work to Ride is a non-profit, providing disadvantaged urban youth from Philadelphia with constructive activities centered around horsemanship, equine sports, and education. Located in Fairmount Park, the setting provides a unique opportunity to bring 7-to 19-year-old youth in contact with animals and nature.

While most participants are trained in several sports, polo has proven to be the perennial favorite of Work to Ride youth.

In 1999, the Work to Ride polo team became the first African American polo team in the nation, and in 2005 the team won the Eastern Regional Interscholastic Polo tournament. The program has been featured in Sports Illustrated, and was twice highlighted on HBO’s “Real Sports”. paraEnd

07.04.07 Work to Ride was featured on NBC's, The Today Show.

06.27.07 Lezlie Hiner, executive director, received the 2007 Philadelphia Sports Community Service Award, presented to the individual, business or organization that has done the most to contribute to the quality of life in Philadelphia through sports.

05.06.07 Congratulations to WTR's Daymar Rosser and Brandon Reece who placed first and third at the Winterthur pony races!
